R Is For Ricochet

This is the fast-paced tale of a beatiful ex-con who lusts for revenge against an evil boyfriend. It starts out innocuously enough, with Millhone hired by wealthy Nord Lafferty to watch over his daughter Reba, recently released on probation after serving 22 months for embezzlement in a California prison. But -- as Graton lovers know -- nothing is ever simple in Kinsley's life. It turns out Reba was innocent, merely covering for her boss and former lover, the married Alan "Beck" Beckwith. But when Kinsey reveals to Reba that Beck is involved with a drug cartel -- and another woman -- Reba proves once again the old adage "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY BOOK REVIEW

Bestseller Grafton offers more of the same-old same-old in her less-than-inspired 18th Kinsey Milhone novel (after 2002's P Is for Peril). In this sexy adventure, the spunky hard-boiled detective has to escort the newly paroled Reba Lafferty, privileged ne'er-do-well, to her stately home, keeping her on the straight and narrow. Reba challenges the PI with her barely concealed hankerings for the now off-limits booze, gambling and charming Alan Beckwith, married real estate developer and former employer for whom Reba took a two-year barbwire vacation courtesy of the California Institution for Women. Lust is in the air as studly, stylish cop Cheney Phillips enters in his red Mercedes, fanning the flames with Kinsey, when Beckwith's activities catch the eye of the feds. Kinsey lends a supportive ear to her beloved 87-year-old landlord, smitten by a 70-year-old neighbor. Kinsey and Reba team up to get the goods on Beckwith, but reckless Reba has vengeful ideas of her own and more than once lands their collective fat in the fire. If the chemistry between Cheney and Kinsey seems forced at times, Grafton as usual creates believable and enduring characters and a strong sense of place in her town of Santa Teresa circa 1987. And that should be more than enough for most fans. Copyright © 2004 Publishers Weekly.

I have yet to fing a book by Sue Grafton that I didn't like. Kinsey Mahone is my kind of person. Self-sufficient, dependable and doesn't need a man to make her feel like a woman. But that dosn't mean she doesn't want a man, she just doesn't need one like some women do. Great series, can't wait for the next one!

Another Good One
January 19, 2010

Sue Grafton always comes up with an interesting story for Kinsey. The characters develop further with every book and we delve deeper into Kinsey's character which makes her one of the most (if not THE most) interesting and layered characters in any continuing series I have read.
