What makes a pet special? A nursing home staff learned the poignant answer when the kitten they adopted grew into a cat with an extraordinary gift. Always a comforting presence at the Steere Nursing Center in Providence, Rhode Island, it became apparent to doctors and staff that Oscar had the uncanny ability to predict when residents were approaching death. Soon his mere presence at a patient’s bedside was indication enough, giving staff members adequate time to inform loved ones. Oscar also provided companionship and comfort to those who would otherwise have died alone.
With profiles of residents and staff, Making Rounds With Oscar is a touching reminder of the mysterious and wondrous ways animals add meaning to our lives.

I read the book because of the cat in a nursing home. I was impressed by the comfort that was given to the dying and their families by this special cat. I also appreciated the open discussion about death and dying. Comfort and acceptance was demonstrated by oscar and the caregivers.

I love cats! This book is so special, not only about Oscar but also about this very special nursing home. This is an educational book about memory loss and other health problems. It is so wonderful that there are some special homes for elderly or sick people to allow animals to reside in these homes to make it feel like home away from home. Thank you Dr. Dosa for sharing this wonderful story.

From when I first saw this book, I Knew it would be a great book. When I received it I know I was right, it is a great story. As to why I loved it, I thought I was buying it because it was about a cat, but I also enjoyed the stories about the residents and their families. I love the book.

This book is well worth reading! The relationship between this cat, the nursing home residents and death, is remarkable. If you are a staff member (or have previously been one, like me) at a nursing home I think you will especially enjoy this book. A great book for those who love both cats and those in nursing homes!
